【讲座】曼城足球和英国足球文化

Nigel, a man from Britain, gave a wonderful speech to English majors about soccer culture in Britain on April 16th, 2018.

2018年4月16日，英国小伙Nigel和大一英语专业的同学们聊了聊英国的足球文化。

• Happy Time 轻松一刻

At first, to make us feel relaxed, Nigel played a little game with us. He showed some multiple-choice questions on the screen: Who’s the linesman, who’s the referee, and who’s the goalkeeper? By answering these questions, students were more involved.

开始之前，为了活跃气氛，让大家放松下来，Nigel和大家玩了个小游戏。屏幕上出现了几个选择题：谁是司线员？谁是裁判？谁是守门员？边玩边答，大家都参与了进来。

Later, he started with a brief history of soccer. From the maps of Britain, we got to know the popularity and wide spread of soccer in the whole country.

接着，Nigel先给大家简单介绍了一下足球的历史，并配上了英国地图。从中我们可以看到足球在英国的流行和广泛分布。

• The Importance of Football 足球至上

So the question came. Why is football so important to English culture? In China, when greeting people, we say “Did you eat?” While in Britain, they say “Who do you stand for?” To some extent, the football teams which they stand for show their main cultures and backgrounds. For them, football is a symbol of tribalism, which gives fans a sense of belonging.

那么问题来了，为什么足球对英国文化如此重要？在中国，见面打招呼，我们问“吃了吗？”而在英国，他们会问“你支持哪个球队？”在某种程度上，他们支持的球队代表了他们的文化和背景。对英国人来说，足球是部落文化的一种象征，这给他们一种归属感。

• Manchester Derby 曼城德比

The Manchester derby refers to football matches between Manchester United and Manchester City. Nigel made a short introduction to both clubs. He described the glories and histories of the two great teams and how they fight against each other till today.

曼彻斯特德比指的是曼联对曼城的同城德比。Nigel对这两个足球俱乐部做了简短的介绍，并向我们描述了这两支球队的卓越战绩和辉煌历史，以及时至今日的德比之战。

After the speech, we know exactly why football means so much to the British as well as to the fans all around the world. Besides, we had a great time with this cute British guy. Therefore, the speech ended up with laughter and applause. See you next time!
